Years of life lost to obstetric fistula to be saved by a specialized women’s hospital

Kampala – September 27, 2017

TERREWODE has signed a partnership agreement with the International Fistula Alliance (IFA), a membership organisation of the Hamlin international partners, to develop Uganda’s first specialized women’s hospital for treatment of obstetric fistula and other childbirth related injuries in Soroti, Eastern Uganda.

The partnership covers the first phase of the TERREWODE Women Community Hospital (TWCH) that will house a 30-bed surgical block, a 30-bed social reintegration block and associated support services including physiotherapy, laboratory, pharmacy, administration, kitchen, and laundry facilities and will be modeled on the world-famous Hamlin Fistula hospital in Ethiopia. .

“At TERREWODE, we are very excited about the prospect of providing high-quality specialist health care to women suffering from obstetric fistula and other childbirth injuries in the region. The partnership has finally helped us realise a more than a decade goal of responding to needs and aspirations of the female community in the region,” Ms. Alice Emasu, Founder and Executive Director of TERREWODE said.

TERREWODE has already purchased land with support of the Uganda Fistula Fund for TERREWODE (UFFT), founded in the United States of America to raise funds for the hospital three years ago. Through UFFT partnership with Ugandan North America Association (UNAA), an association of Ugandan’s in the Diaspora, and other individuals, the UFFT has committed to raise USD 300,000 towards this cause.

TERREWODE, the primary implementing partner, shares a lot with the Hamlin partners with regards standard of health care for obstetric fistula patients..

The IFA, through its members Hamlin Fistula USA and Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (Australia), will provide capital funding of $ 1.3 million as well as capacity building and a contribution to future operating costs of the new hospital. Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) will provide clinical training and support. The Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia facility is a global centre of excellence for addressing obstetric fistula.

“I was inspired by Dr. Catherine Hamlin insights on what works in addressing obstetric fistula even before meeting her. I am glad that we will be working with an excellent model of care she developed. She is an incredible world woman leader who believes in the power of emancipating women through better health services.” Emasu said.

She added that the partnership compliments support of TERREWODE’s existing partners especially the Worldwide Fistula Fund and the Global Fund for Human Rights, a US based charities that have dedicated more than a decade funding the organizations holistic obstetric fistula work in the country.

Over the last 15 years, TERREWODE has implemented a comprehensive obstetric fistula program in partnership with the Ugandan Ministry of Health, and its fistula partners and health facilities especially Mulago National Referral Hospital and Soroti Regional Referral Hospital; including the Local Governments, especially,  Soroti  District Local Government. It has established a diverse vibrant community volunteer network to raise awareness, identify, refer and support women for treatment and socially reintegrate them back in their communities.

The new partnership will address several existing gaps our comprehensive obstetric fistula approach.
